But Sager's made her so desperate and in dire straits that she's willing to overlook the odd rules and the cash under the table because it means a roof over her head and money in the bank. All it did was set me up for what's pretty obvious from the start, there's something hinky going on at this apartment building! Even our heroine knows it. The book is dedicated to Ira Levin, which, if you're literarily savvy is kind of a spoiler as far as a book about a mysterious apartment is concerned. But I do have to say that I think Lock Every Door is his best to date. And it's undeniably true that every one of his books is an absolute page turner. “With just three books under his belt, Riley Sager has made a name for himself as a master of suspense. ![]()

One of the best examples of Wharton's careful control is seen in the descriptions of the events immediately before and after the "smash-up." As Mattie and Ethan ride the sled down the hill, Wharton captures the initial thrill of the speed and then Ethan's frenzied determination to drive them straight into the elm tree. Throughout the novel, Wharton builds up patterns of imagery, patterns of behavior, and specially charged words all of which serve a definite stylistic and structural purpose. ![]() Her choice of vocabulary and sentence structure, which is as stark as the lives led by her protagonists, is deceptive. Edith Wharton's writing style is characterized by simplicity and control. ![]() ![]() ![]() There were times of repetition of narratives however, Nina added some context to each so that it made sense in the placement of the chapters. Hardback books with a 1″ width (equivalent to 250-300 pages). The rules Nina set out would be difficult but would be well worth it: Would I call for a sabbatical or consider being paid for an experience like this?! Not having a family at the moment, it technically would be ‘easier’ to manage however, I was jokingly advised to read only children’s books if I were to do this! That would not be setting myself up for a challenge or feeling accomplished. When Nina first started, I couldn’t imagine balancing being a stay-at-home-mom with the work she describes as this adventure. Following her year of reading a book a day, I pondered what would that look like for me? Of course, I’d never hope for loss or pain to lead me to this escape, but more so looking at how I can I care for myself and learn more about me that I have yet allowed myself to do. After completing her memoir, I find myself exploring its contents more than I anticipated. I stumbled across Nina’s site about a year ago and bookmarked the page to come back. Between the illustrations, manipulation of font, and storyline, this is a good chapter book for pre-teens. It is reminiscent of The True Diary of a Part-Time Indian in its format, but it is much more appropriate for a younger audience. ![]() The story itself seems to be geared more toward boys, but girls may enjoy it as well. The illustrations, seemingly hand-drawn, are eye-catching and add to the story. It does contain some language (e.g.- crap) that may be more suitable for children who are a little older but who are into chapter books. His sinister accountant minions and sets of instruction booklets lay out the experiences his tourists are to have – and as these involve the usual fantasy novel tropes of setting out as a brave band of explorers, encountering wizards and dwarves, being ambushes, having battles with mythical creatures and slaying a Dark Lord, Wynne Jones can have great fun with how it all works behind the scenes. The somewhat slimy Mr Chesney has been running Pilgrim Parties from the next-door universe for 40 years. I acquired this one from my London book-buying trip in November – the lovely Luci always brings along a big bag of books and this one immediately appealed. Diana Wynne Jones – “Dark Lord of Derkholm” I did, however, push aside my Friday Housecleaning to sit on my bottom and finish the last 100 pages. The reason this one isn’t in the photo above is that I took it to Iceland to read on the plane home, but didn’t get very far due to spending most of the flight asleep. She’s the author who I always push at people (recommend to people?) who have liked Harry Potter – her Chrestomanci series has a similar Boy Wizard idea but is just as good, if not better. The fantasy writer I will always read, Diana Wynne Jones’ books are consistently well-written, funny but not stupidly so, gender-balanced and unputdownable. ![]() |
